Tarmo
Watia is a well-established artist on the Boise art
scene. Born in Detroit, this Finnish-America artist
is a master of line, color and composition, with a highly
personal set of imagery and symbolism. He has been working
for over forty years and is hugely prolific.
He
studied at the University of Michigan in the 1960s,
has extensively travelled the world but is now very
settled in Idaho. He is a big outdoorsman with a great
love for fishing.
His
work combines an innate sense of compositional theory
with joyous tangle of images drawn from deeply imagined
versions of his everyday life. Recurring themes, character
and animals come together as a complicated iconography
with a simply folk-art sensibility.
