Much
of Matt Bodett’s work to date has charted his
own mental health and interaction with the world. In
his most c urrent series of paintings and monotypes
he engages with the viewer by making the subject matter
more abstract, creating ambiguity. Although the artist
has stepped back a little from being the main focus,
these are still highly personalized statements. However,
instead of a one-way communication he now creates space
for a dialogue to develop with his audience.
Beginning
with assemblages of found imagery he works at erasing
keys and texts that might too easily dictate a translation
or predetermined meaning. This void acts as a device
that allows the viewer to create their own interpretation
of these visually quiet, peaceful and contemplative
works.
“This
Series consists of drawings, paintings and prints constructed
from found building plans and illustrations from old
copies of ‘Readers’ Digest’. By removing
all the text and indicating markers from the building
plans, and removing the extra information from the illustrations
I have created the context for the viewer’s relationships
to space, location and people to complete the experience
of the work.”
