Emiko Aida

Emiko Aida was born in Jindajii, Tokyo, a town with a Japanese temple dedicated to the Water God. Growing up, Emiko was surrounded by wetlands, streams and rivers. She now lives in London, which she remarkably finds arid and her images show a search for a more humid atmosphere. Her watery world, pictured in her etchings and paintings, is a place where she feels at home. She finds water to be the element she most strongly connects to both spiritually and emotionally.

She is a vigilant observer of human beings finding themselves in alien surroundings that are of their own making. A spiritual mysticism is surrealy depicted against an urban backdrop as Aida creates atmospheric scenes sympathetic with intimate human experience.

“My works are the visual equivalent of the Haiku, the Japanese 17 syllable verse. I invite the viewer to use their imagination and engage with my imagery: dew, raindrops, rainstorms and urban lives.”

She is a member of Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and South Bank Printmakers. Her work is exhibited widely through out the U.K., the U.S.A. and Japan. She has work in many private, public and corporate collections including the New York Public Library, and Guangdong Museum of Art, China. She has acquired numerous awards and accolades, the Japan University of Printmaking Purchase Prize (1982 &1983), The Nordstern Award in Royal Academy of Arts (1997) , Coley & Tiley Prize RBSA (1998 & 1999), Curwen Studio Award, Bankside Gallery (2011). She teaches Printmaking at The Hampstead School of Art and her works are featured in the book, “Printmakers Today” published by Schiffer Publishing (USA).
