Brumfield
LLC Doing Business As Basement Gallery
Brumfield LLC is a husband and wife team,
Mike and Jane Brumfield. The couple moved to Boise in December
2008. They had owned the Weekend Gallery in Hastings on the
English South Coast and were keen to become actively involved
in the art scene at their new home. The Basement Gallery was
founded by Perry Allen in 1988, launching the careers of many
young Boise artists ,and becoming a cornerstone of the Boise
art scene. The Brumfield's bought the gallery in January 2010.
The gallery is curated by Jane, and there is a definite leaning
towards contemporary figurative, surreal and narrative art
with a definite edginess. "We favour work which demonstrates
the eccentricities, fragilities and irrational nature of the
human condition. Although some of the work may lean towards
the strange and/or macabre there is always a thread of humour
or glimmer of optimism." Jane Brumfield has over
20 years of experience curating exhibitions. Much of this
was spent in the publicly funded gallery sector in the UK.
Mike
Brumfield comes from a different field, having worked if the
oil and gas drilling industry for 30 years. His input gives
the gallery a second eye, which serves to keep the program
fresh. His focus is more on the business side of keeping a
gallery afloat, and he has become a very skilled custom framer.
The
Basement Gallery remains an active provocateur on the Boise
scene and is perhaps one of the most exciting spaces in Idaho's
State Capital with its mix of contemporary American and British
art.
Artists
Submissions
We are programed 18 months ahead, and there are very few opportunities to for us to respond to unsolicited submissions from new artists. We
are always interested in seeing new work, but realistically, we rarely incorporatate artists who have approached us in this way. Generally we find artist through our own research. We can not accomodate artists making unsolicited visits to the gallery. Please do not submit your work to us if it would not obviously fit in with the charater and nature of the gallery. This is based on our taste, which, although fairly eclectic does
favour contemporary figurative, surreal and narrative art
with a definite edginess.
Should you still decide to submit your work to us, please do this by
email. You may send a link to a website or attach jpeg images.
We need to see enough of your work to get a good idea, but
do not send too many images - about 6-10 is plenty. Please do not send powerpoint presentations or multipage PDFs.
We prefer to receive images as separate jpeg files. Please format
you images so each file does not exceed 100KB, or each email
1MB.
We
will only go on to arrange a gallery appointment or studio
visit if we feel that the work is, not only of a high quality,
but will fit in with the nature of the gallery. We take on very few artists by submission
finding most of our artist through our own research.
